LATVIAN SAUNA MASTERCLASS 2024

The opportunity to show and prove yourself through the Latvian way of life

Since 2011, under different names, competitions and shows have been held among Latvian sauna bathers, and this year professionals are invited to participate in the "Bathers' Mastery Show", which will take place on 2 November in the new Saulkrasti recreation and sauna citadel "Forrest Glamp Saulkrasti". The event is organised by Jānis Pavlovičs in cooperation with the Latvian Sauna Union and the nature resort "Forrest Glamp Saulkrasti", with an emphasis on nurturing Latvian sauna traditions and developing individual sauna rituals.

The meaning of the Latvian bath and the role of the bath-keeper
For Latvians, baths have always been a place of wellness, as well as a place to revitalise the body and mind, and today they are rapidly regaining popularity among other rituals for pampering the body and rebalancing the mind.

In Latvia, a sauna technician, a sauna master and even a sauna master's assistant are included in the classification of professions as beauty professionals, just like beauticians and spa professionals. Interestingly, the term "sauna" itself is untranslatable - it is neither a sauna nor a "banya", but a term that encompasses a sense of folk life. Often colloquially, a sauna is referred to as a healing place or sanctuary for the body, mind and soul".

Objective of the event
The main aim of the show is to identify experts in Latvian sauna traditions, to share experiences and to promote Latvian sauna rituals. The participants' skills will be evaluated in several categories - preparation of the sauna room according to the procedure, preparation of the sauna place, contact with the client, steam management and use, use and variety of sauna rolls, etc. A special emphasis will be placed on the use of Latvian power signs, folk songs, power words, etc.

Refereeing team
Experienced sauna masters will judge the participants:

Ziedonis Kārkliņš

Jan Pavlovičs

Gennady Moroz

Romuald Lamster

The main judge will be Jānis Pavlovičs, the author of the idea and founder of the sauna mastery school "Jānis Pavlovičs sauna school".

Valuable lectures for the audience
In between the demonstrations of sauna skills, the audience will also have the opportunity to listen to lectures and improve their practical and theoretical sauna knowledge. The sauna masters have prepared special lectures on various current sauna topics:

  • Romualds Lamsters in "Healthwatch"
  • "What is a Latvian sauna?" - Ziedonis Kārkliņš
  • "A Gentle Sauna Programme for All" - Ganadhi Moroz
  • "Safe use of the bath in ancient and modern times: mystique, myths and knowledge" - Jānis Pavlovičs
  • "Bath and rituals: a decade of the South Estonian bath heritage at UNESCO. What changes are taking place in sauna culture in Estonia" - Eda Veeroja's lecture will be a special surprise for all sauna experts and those interested in sauna.

Participant selection and prizes
The competition is open to any professional or amateur sauna bathers with the appropriate training - men and women over 18 years of age. Cash prizes, incentive prizes and diplomas will be awarded according to performance.
